THE EVERYDAY SOUND

An audio-visual installation exploring the unnoticed soundscapes of daily life.

This installation invites audiences to slow down and re-engage with the sonic textures of their surroundings — from the familiar footsteps outside your door to the kettle screaming when your water is done boiling. Using interviews, journals, and guided audio experiences, this project captures the richness of ordinary moments often tuned out.

THE SOUNDS

I conducted a survey to find out what sounds people notice the most in their everyday lives. Each sound was then recorded binaurally in order to give listeners a more accurate representation of the soundscape.

THE WORKBOOKS

There are five workbooks participants can interact with. Each workbook acts as a hands-on reflection tool encouraging them to document their own observations and sensations. The brief was simple: Just draw.

THE COLLECTION

After completing their workbook, participants may then display their illustrations. From there, we are able to discover how a singular sound is able to bring about a variety of shapes, colours, and meaning. Whether a person focuses on the tone of the sound, the memories attached to them, or the story a sound is trying to tell.

THE JOURNAL

In this journal, I’ve decided to share my ideation process, the recording process, and workbook artworks done by others. When creating this project, it was important for me to focus on the emotional aspect of sound. To allow others to be vulnerable when in touch with their senses.

I created this journal as a way to archive my own story behind this project. I talk about my relationship with sound, the importance of sound in my life, and most importantly, my own visual interpretations of the sounds. While these are difficult topics for me to share about, I felt that being open with my emotions was apt for this project. This small journal is personal to me. And I hope it helps others feel more comfortable to feel their feelings.
